A Little Nonsense Would Do You Good
Lessons from Willy Wonka
“A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men.” -Willy Wonka
Wonka delivers this line to Mr. Salt as the chocolate factory visitors observe the golden geese laying their eggs. Moments later, Veruca Salt is belting out a half tantrum, half song, displaying all her rotten tendencies. The song hits a crescendo as Veruca is deemed a bad egg and sent down a chute and off the screen.
From the little we see of Veruca, I think Mr. Salt deals with quite a bit of nonsense, but not the type Mr. Wonka is suggesting. Mr. Salt and Mr. Wonka are polar opposites. Mr. Wonka always has a witty quip or a game to be played, while Mr. Salt takes every threat his bratty daughter levels seriously and acts irrationally to appease her.
In the end, we’re left with two different fruits from their approaches: A rotten egg and a worthy heir to the chocolate empire in Charlie.
It’s Friday. It’s time for a little nonsense.
