Unwavering commitment and vision
"I would, too, were I Parmenio! But I am Alexander." -Alexander The Great
Context: We are in a time of conquerors. Darius of Persia and Alexander of Macedonia. Alexander has recently ascended to the throne after his father’s untimely passing and is now executing his father’s vision to conquer the world.
Up to this point he has expanded his empire with ease, but now the Persians stand in his way. After an initial battle, Darius decides to resolve the conflict with diplomacy. He makes a first, then second attempt to placate the young emperor. Nothing.
Finally, he makes a final third plea for peace, offering Alexander riches, his daughter, and even half of his kingdom. Alexander presents this offer to his closest advisors. One of his generals, Parmenio, encouraged Alexander to accept the offer. Cue today’s quote.
There would only be one King of Asia.
