Parkinson’s law is the idea that you will stretch out tasks to fit the time you allot to them. In other words, if you say it will take you an hour to clean your bedroom you’ll probably use the full hour.

Parkinson’s law is primarily cited in negative contexts. It’s meant to draw reflection and the examples, like mine, typically only point in one direction. So does it work in reverse?

Silicon valley’s favorite hippie pioneered this idea through something called the Reality Distortion Field (RDF). Mind control, wizardry, gas lighting, spin it however you want it RDF was Steve Jobs super power. Steve had the ability to convince just about anyone through a mixture of charm and persistence that not only was his vision of the world possible, but inevitable.

Through RDF timelines were pulled forward, new products rolled off the factory floor, and Apple went from existing in the garage to being in all of our pockets. Steve’s gone but the charisma is still there, you probably even felt the RDF as you read his quote.
