Get Comfortable in Open Water

“One doesn’t discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time” -Andre Gide

I can’t imagine being Columbus and setting sail in hopes of finding a new trade route but not really having an idea what was beyond the horizon. I’m not sure if extreme hope or desperation pushes someone to that point, but I reckon it’s hope. Desperation would deteriorate much quicker into despair, whereas hope could keep you going for the days, weeks, and months at open sea.

The same goes for our figurative journeys on the open sea. Leaving your job to pursue a new career, moving out of your hometown to a city you don’t know, or just trying to break away from an old version of yourself. I actually think the decision to change is easy. The long months on the open water is where madness sets in.

But the madness is the price you must pay.
