Good and evil splits the heart

“If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?” ― Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

If you’re unfamiliar with this 20th century author, he is largely responsible for the literary unmasking of the Soviet Union and their Gulag labor camps.

His written words toppled a nation and an ideology.

This quote is directly from one of his books, The Gulag Archipelago. The story documents Aleksandr’s time inside the Gulag and his commentary on the country and its people.

It’s a beast of a book, but it is full of introspective quotes like this that make it worth the read.

Just look at him. This guy saw it all.
