Kill Me, But Don't Overcook Me

Maintaining wit in the face of death

Today's quote is just eight words that, at first glance, make little sense without context. The story is both brutal and remarkable.

In the third century, opponents of the Christianity were persecuting the church. They beheaded the Pope, but not before he warned his deacon Saint Lawrence that he would soon meet a similar fate. With this in mind, Lawrence gathered all his personal wealth along with church funds and distributed them to the poor. This action enraged the Prefect of Rome, who had intended to seize the church's fortune for himself.

The Prefect condemned Lawrence to a slow, fiery death over an iron grill. Rather than break under the torture, Lawrence met his fate with extraordinary courage and wit. As he burned, he uttered these words

"Turn me over, I'm done on this side"

Today, the Catholic church recognizes him as the patron saint of schoolchildren, the poor, and most notably, cooks and comedians.
