Multitasking is Mass Murder For Ambition

“He who chases two hares catches neither.” -Desiderius Erasmus

A common worry you’ll find in people is that they’re not going to make it. Now, the “it” is usually an ambiguous placeholder. People have dreams, but typically they have multiple. They think they may be a good podcaster, small business owner, or professor, and they would really be happy with any of the three. Any of the three would qualify as “making it”.

So they spend time recording themselves talking about politics, they open an Etsy shop selling figurines, and they decide they’ll study for the GMAT so they can go back to grad school. Three months later, and they have a fancy microphone that is collecting dust, an online shop with two sales, and they are only a third of the way through their GMAT study guide.

So they give up and feel like a failure. Can you blame them? Not only did they not make “it”, they didn’t make it three times over. The lesson they end up learning is they’re not good enough for any of their dreams. Which is almost correct.

The reality is you’re not good enough for all of your dreams.

At least, not all at the same time. Multitasking is mass murder for ambition. Your dreams each deserve your undivided attention. So give each one its time and season. You might end up being good enough for each one when all is said and done.
