Only Empty Rooms Can Echo

Lessons from those who boast

“You can boast about anything if it’s all you have. Maybe the less you have, the more you are required to boast.” -John Steinbeck

Truth sometimes introduces nuance rather than abject clarity.

It’s easy to look at someone who is flaunting their material things as shallow or conceited. It might even be enjoyable. Realizing that the reason they flaunt is because their life is in fact shallow, devoid of real substance evokes complex emotions.

You may still dislike them, but they aren’t quite the same spoiled brat you saw before. You may pity them, but they certainly don’t appear to want your pity. At the very least you will begin to understand them.

Only empty rooms can echo.
