Today’s Quote
“When the axe came into the woods, many of the trees said ‘At least the handle is one of us’.”
NASA blasted this quote into space back in 2021. No, not figuratively. They literally put this Turkish Proverb into a time capsule, loaded it into a rocket, and then blasted it away.
Why?
Well, NASA has always placed messages in its spacecraft that exit the solar system in the off chance that intelligent life intercepts it. This particular mission also included messages from Ringo Starr, Albert Einstein, and MLK. But the inclusion of this quote begs another question.
The proverb is centered around this idea of self deception and betrayal. Most people would call it sage advice to look for similarities when meeting someone new or encountering something unfamiliar. This proverb gives the opposite counsel. The tree trusts the axe because it can see some of itself in the wooden handle ultimately to its demise. So again, this begs the question:
What does it say about us, as a species, that we want this to be the first message we share with aliens?
