Put Back On Your Horse Blinders

Why being myopic is an advantage

“I’m drawn again and again to obsessives. I like them. I like the idea that someone could push away all the concerns and details that make up everyday life and just zero in on the thing- the thing that fits the contours of his or her imagination. Obsessives lead us astray sometimes. Can’t see the bigger picture. Serve not just the world’s but also their own narrow interests. But I don’t think we get progress or innovation or joy or beauty without obsessives” -Malcolm Gladwell

Horse blinders are devices attached to the cheekpieces on a driving harness. They prevent a horse from looking back and typically block the horse’s view to the side. The blinders force the horse to look forward through a narrow lens.

“Take off your horse blinders” or “You have blinders” is a common phrase to criticize someone who has become myopic. If only you saw the full picture, then you wouldn’t act like a moron. On its face, it’s solid advice. How can you make informed decisions if you don’t have all the information? How can you live a balanced life without seeing everything life has to offer?

Solid objections. If humans could actually consume all the information available to them, it would be a good point. But we can’t. And even if we could, we would realize most information is bad information.

And all balance is good for is gymnastics, tight ropes, and diets.

Put the blinders back on. You got work to do.
