The art of making others shine
In 1874, Benjamin Disraeli and William Gladstone were facing off for the United Kingdom’s highest elected office, Prime Minister. A week before the election a young Jennie Jerome, Winston Churchill’s mother, dined with both men. After, a journalist asked her to share her experience. Here’s what she had to say:
"When I left the dining room after sitting next to Gladstone, I thought he was the cleverest man in England. But when I sat next to Disraeli, I left feeling that I was the cleverest woman."
Disraeli won the election in a landslide.
