Visiting Washington DC as a tourist can be overwhelming. There's a museum for every subject, a monument on every city block. The whole place is filled with American history. Everyone has a top site to visit; for me, it's the FDR memorial.

It spans eight acres along the Tidal Basin, telling Roosevelt's story through four outdoor rooms - one for each term. The third room represents his time as president during WWII, and this quote is carved into the wall. It's a confession of a man who tried to keep America out of war until he couldn't, then witnessed humanity at its worst.

The memorial's waterfalls are chaotic in this section. The walls are fractured. And it feels as if the bronze figures are huddled in fear. Post-WWII, FDR's words echo what he learned the hard way: "More than an end to war, we want an end to the beginnings of all wars."

Grateful for strong leaders whose lessons can still be applied today.
