The Price Of Knowing Yourself
Luxury Suffering
Today’s Quote
“I judge you unfortunate because you have never lived through misfortune. You have passed through life without an opponent- no one can ever know what you are capable of, not even you.” -Seneca
Luxury suffering. A brand of hardship that makes most people sarcastically scoff “Must be nice.” It’s the friend who fails all her classes one semester, only for her dad to wire a fresh set of funds along with an itinerary for the upcoming family vacation. No repercussions, no expectations, just stasis.
But don’t mistake luxury suffering as an exclusive curse of the financial elites. Bubble wrap is cheap, and you can be insulated from hardship just about anywhere. The failed-to-launch young adult playing Minecraft at home is on just as much of a vacation as his bougie alter ego who just failed her classes. Adult babies come in all socioeconomic classes.
The cruelest existence is one void of challenges. No one writes stories about the nepo baby or the middle aged Minecraft player wrapped in bubble wrap. Knowing what you are capable of is a privilege that must be paid for through hardship and misfortune.
