Think for yourself
"To find yourself, think for yourself." -Socrates
In 1936, the Nazi party was at the height of its power. With the second World War on the horizon, compliance to the ruling party was the standard. Membership to the Nazi youth was required[1], civil servants and armed forces personnel were required to swear an Oath to Hitler[2], and the first concentration camp was opened[3].
Disloyalty could result in death and August Landmesser was willing to risk everything.
August was a German man in love with a Jewish woman. For this, the two of them spent years in and out of prison until August was conscripted in a penal battalion and his love, Irma Eckler, was sent to a concentration camp. This would result in both of their deaths[4].
There are no quotes to share for August. Only a photo that lives in infamy. In 1936, a picture was taken showcasing a shipyard of workers performing the Nazi salute. One man stands arms crossed, resolute in his beliefs.
