Your life's meaning is up to you

Thoughts on existentialism

“Above all, do not lose your desire to walk. Every day, I walk myself into a state of well-being & walk away from every illness. I have walked myself into my best thoughts, and I know of no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it. But by sitting still, & the more one sits still, the closer one comes to feeling ill. Thus if one just keeps on walking, everything will be all right.”
- Søren Kierkegaard

Søren Kierkegaard is regarded by many as the father of existentialism.

Existentialism is the philosophy that revolves around an individual’s freedom, choice, and responsibility to create their own meaning in life in spite of the absurd world we find ourselves in. In layman’s terms, life is nuts and it’s up to you to make it mean something.

Discovering this truth inspires two polar opposite reactions, paralysis and bravery. The paralysis is often labeled an ‘existential crisis’. Life is absurd and you must find the meaning, but what if you don’t find it? More so, what if there is nothing to find?

The other emotion, bravery, is a mix of faith and action. A faith that you will find a meaning in this absurd world, and you will not passively wait for it to find you.
